Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. (ESV)
This was today’s verse. I read it several times and was confused. I did not understand what it was trying to tell me. I really like the Bible app on my smartphone. One of the features I like is the image provided for the daily verse. And today the image helped me understand the verse’s meaning: Anger is okay, but do not sin because I am angry (my paraphrase).
Thinking it would be nice to compare various translations but thinking I would need to go to each translation individually, I stumbled upon the Compare feature. This feature shows the same verse (or verses) on the same page in several versions (today was ESV, NASB, KJV, NIV, and MSG).
The NIV version spoke to me in words which I clearly understood:
“In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (NIV)
